Week 6

Working to get posters ready for final presentation.

Rationale:

The concept of the two posters is the increased level of criticism faced by women, and the inequality this creates. It is specifically targeted at the contemporary student demographic, shown by the language used in the poster, which is fairly typical of current youth conversation. The imagery of the dogs is used to play on the slur ‘bitch’, and the animal’s association with men, making the gendering of it as female more jarring.

The first ‘bitch’ poster uses a grayscale palette, barring the pink, which creates contrast and genders the dog as female. The bold, flat colours and text juxtapose with the scrawled ‘bitch’, heightening the aggression and pathos.

The second ‘slut’ poster has a more pastel palette, again drawing on the gendered colours of pink/blue. It is less aggressive, but still creates a pathos reaction with the contrast between the large, stamped textured ‘slut’ against the simpler legend.

Week 5

This week was the second interim, and I presented these posters.

From the previous week's feedback I redrew the dogs in the first image in a more simplistic style and introduced more pastel colours to make it more stylistically different from the bottom image.

For the bottom image I amped up the colour contrast, and zoomed in on the dogs to increase the tension.

Feedback from the interim suggested I make the words in the first image on the dogs, as a sort of stamp or brand, and create the bottom image in portrait, which I did for the second thursday class

Week 4
This week we further refined the posters from interim focussing on the feedback we received, and also focussed on deciding on our specific concept and making sure we had two different visualisations for it. My specific concept is the increased level of criticism women face in comparison to men, in particular with gendered insults.

These were the main different visualisations I settled on.

I also experimented with the idea of using other animals, such as the lion and the rabbit (both known for being promiscuous), but felt the connection was too loose, and not really something I wanted to draw.

From critique with the tutors, it was decided that the second and third poster designs would be developed, as they were the strongest. Although I had been unsure as to whether the third design would be too similar to the second, it is still stylistically different enough to work, and more interesting than the first design.

For the second class, I further rendered the more aggressive poster, also dropping the bow.

Week 3

This week was the first interim, and these were the four concepts I chose as the best.

In the end it was decided that the image of the two dogs was the strongest, and that was the one used in the interim presentation. The feedback generally showed that most people were able to grasp the meaning of it, although there were a few who were unable to see past the dog imagery.

Week 2

We continued researching and mind mapping our chosen topic, and then began using these ideas to ideate basic thumbnails. We learnt basic ideation techniques to assist with this. I decided on gender roles for my inequality topic. We then began refining these thumbnails for the interim presentation.

We also began looking at artist precendents, seen below:

Design is very confronting and aggressive, with high contrast and heavy pathos imagery. The inclusion of the body copy then reinforces the message of the poster with logos.
Contrasting colours and strong texture, combined with negative space make the images stand out. Type is also strong and easily readable.
The flat vectorness and familiarity of the google searchbar, combined with the jarring placement of it create a focal point, drawing your eye to the poster. The strong language also draws heavily on pathos to create impact.
Week 1

We were introduced to the brief, and the concept of Ihi and Wehi. We started analysing images to understand the ihi and wehi behind them, and began researching broadly about inequality vs. equality in New Zealand. In the second half of the week we began looking more specifically at topics we would like to investigate for our assignment.

I decided on gender inequality, and began researching this topic further, on these sites in particular:
